Energy and basic materials shares led the S&P 500 higher on Monday as major Wall Street indexes pared initial losses to trade higher.

The shift came after data showed the pace of growth in the U.S. manufacturing sector picked up a tad in March, while new orders dipped modestly.

The Dow Jones industrial average <.DJI> edged up 7.72 points, or 0.06 percent, to 13,219.76. The S&P 500 Index <.SPX> gained 4.53 points, or 0.32 percent, to 1,413.00. The Nasdaq Composite <.IXIC> rose 9.05 points, or 0.29 percent, to 3,100.62.
