Cristiano Ronaldo moved to within one goal of the Champions League scoring record with a majestic strike to give Real Madrid the lead over Liverpool at Anfield. After a frantic opening 20 minutes in the meeting of the two European giants, Madrid and Ronaldo went in from with a moment of real class. Colombian James Rodriguez lifted a superb return pass over Liverpool defender Dejan Lovren to perfectly find the run of Ronaldo who met the ball with a sumptuous first-time half-volley finish into the far corner of the net without merely a look to see where the goal or goalkeeper Simon Mignolet were located.

The goal gave Ronaldo his 70th in Europe’s premier competition and was particularly sweet given the six years he spent with Liverpool’s fierce rivals Manchester United. It also continued the current world player of the year’s extraordinary start to the season and gave him his 18th goal in just 10 appearances.

Real Madrid came into the Champions League Group B match with a perfect six points from two matches, while Liverpool followed up their opening win over Ludogorets with a disappointing defeat at Swiss champions Basel.
