“Dancing with the Stars” had its “most memorable” episode on Monday night -- and no, it wasn’t just because Alfonso Ribeiro performed his popular dance move “The Carlton” during week 4 of the 2014 season. The theme of Monday night’s competition of the hit ABC reality series required the celebrities to perform a tribute routine that honored the most memorable point in their lives. And while many of the celebrities had us teary-eyed with their emotional stories, it was Betsey Johnson who sent us to bed with a knot in our stomach.

The 72-year-old fashion designer was eliminated from the Season 19 competition after she performed an underwhelming jive with her partner Tony Dovolani. Although Johnson started with her best foot forward, her routine fell short when she wasn’t able to keep up with the quick pace dance, which honored her daughter Lulu.

“That was phenomenal … you nailed every step of that dance,” Carrie Ann Inaba complimented the fashion icon for giving her best every week. And while Bruno Tonioli concurred with his fellow judge’s sentiment, he noted that Johnson’s jive went a little wacky at the end. “I have to say, keeping up with the jive is hard for anyone, and you did it very, very well up until the point where you went wrong,” he critiqued.

Overall, Johnson earned two 7s and an 8 from the judges, giving her a total score of 29 out of 40. This put her in the bottom two with NASCAR legend Michael Waltrip, who was rewarded with a 25, the second-lowest score of the night, for his quickstep.

But it seemed Waltrip had a fan base rather larger than Johnson’s because it was the fashion entrepreneur who was booted after the viewers cast their votes. For the first time in “DWTS” history, viewers were able to act as guest judges by casting votes live. Viewers had two minutes from the start of each routine to register their vote, which was factored in with the scores of the other judges.

But in the end, the Waltripians outvoted the Johnsonites, forcing the designer to split from the 2014 season of “DWTS.”

"Thank you, thank you, mostly to Tony, to my fans, this has been the best wonderful thing," Johnson said after getting eliminated. "It's just been a trip, a big trip!"
