David Luiz scored a memorable long-range strike to put Chelsea ahead against Fulham during the sides’ Premier League encounter at Craven Cottage on Wednesday.

In the 30th minute of the contest, the Brazil international picked up the ball fully 35 yards from goal before unleashing an unstoppable right-footed strike that soared into the top of Fulham goalkeeper Mark Schwarzer’s net.

A defender by trade, Luiz has carved out a reputation for his buccaneering runs upfield and a blistering shot that he again showed to devastating effect.

The goal could prove crucial too if it helps Chelsea to the three points in the west London derby. If the Blues can beat their neighbors then Chelsea will go back above Arsenal into third place in the Premier League and will still have a game in hand on their rivals. The top four earn a place in the Champions League for next season.

A win would also come as a boost after Chelsea exited the FA Cup at the semifinal stage to Manchester City at the weekend. In what has been a hectic season for the Blues, they remain in the Europa League semifinals.

Luiz, 25, signed from Chelsea from Benfica in January 2011 and is making his 24th appearance in the Premier League this season.
