The dollar hit a seven-month low versus the yen on Thursday, stung by broad weakness and as traders took a stab at stop-loss orders suspected around the dollar's weakest of the year.

The dollar JPY= fell as low as 87.79 yen, its lowest since December 2009, according to Reuters data. The U.S. currency's losses accelerated after it broke through stops at 87.90 yen, while traders said they expected more littered under 87.80 yen.

The U.S. currency's losses against the yen came as it fell to a session low against a currency basket of 85.516 .DXY .

At the same time, the yen rallied across the board on its perceived safe-haven status, pushing the high-risk Australian currency nearly 1 percent lower on the day to 73.35 yen AUDJPY=R (Reporting by Naomi Tajitsu)
