U.S. stocks fell on Friday as bank stocks retreated and a decline in crude prices hurt energy companies' shares.

The Dow Jones industrial average <.DJI> dropped 89.84 points, or 1.08 percent, to 8,241.48. The Standard & Poor's 500 Index <.SPX> fell 12.98 points, or 1.45 percent, to 880.09. The Nasdaq Composite Index <.IXIC> lost 9.70 points, or 0.57 percent, to 1,679.51.
