U.S. stocks ended mixed on Friday, with the Dow and Nasdaq up and the S&P 500 down. Upbeat earnings results from IBM offset disappointing numbers from General Electric Co .

For the week, however, stocks put in their best gains since mid-March, with all three major indexes climbing 7 percent. The Dow was up 7.3 percent for the week, while the S&P 7 500 was up percent and the Nasdaq was up 7.4 percent.

For the day, based on the latest figures, the Dow Jones industrial average <.DJI> was up 32.12 points, or 0.37 percent, to end unofficially at 8,743.94. But the Standard & Poor's 500 Index <.SPX> was down just 0.36 of a point, or 0.04 percent, to finish unofficially at 940.38. And the Nasdaq Composite Index <.IXIC> was up 1.58 points, or 0.08 percent, to close unofficially at 1,886.61.
