The Dow industrials and the S&P 500 opened lower on Friday after Chevron Corp warned about second-quarter earnings, compounding worries about the energy sector's outlook amid a drop in oil prices.

* The Nasdaq was near breakeven following some strength in shares of big-cap technology companies after Goldman Sachs raised the U.S. hardware sector to attractive from neutral.

* The Dow Jones industrial average <.DJI> fell 38.54 points, or 0.47 percent, at 8,144.63. The Standard & Poor's 500 Index <.SPX> was down 4.27 points, or 0.48 percent, at 878.41. The Nasdaq Composite Index <.IXIC> was up 1.51 points, or 0.09 percent, at 1,754.06.
