Today, Microsoft debuted its new antivirus software, “Microsoft Security Essentials” for a free download for all Windows users.

The company said that Morro – the internal working name of the project -- provides protection from several types of malicious software including viruses, spyware, rootkits and trojans. The new antivirus is said to be a core of essential anti-malware tools that protects users from the unhealthy Internet world.

The free antivirus service undergone internal testing within Microsoft with the last six months and the company had originally planned to release the software by the end of this year.

The software is compatible with Windows XP, Windows Vista, and Windows 7 operating systems.
