A powerful earthquake of preliminary magnitude 6.4 struck northeast Japan on Sunday, Japanese television network NHK reported.

Reuters said there were no immediate reports of injuries or damage and no tsunami warning was issued. The quake was felt as far away as Tokyo.

This was the same region of Japan that was jolted by a massive earthquake and tsunami last March which created a crisis at the Fukushima nuclear power plant.
