Edwin Edwards, the 85-year-old former governor of Louisiana, is a new father – not grandfather – today after his wife, Trina, who is more than 50 years his junior, gave birth.

Trina Edwards, 34, gave birth to a healthy baby boy on Thursday, according to a Facebook post on her wall announcing the baby’s birth at 12:52 a.m. The birth announcement also said the baby boy’s name will likely be Eli Wallace, after her husband’s father.

“At 12:52 a.m., we welcomed a healthy, beautiful baby boy! He weighs 6lbs 3ozs, 19 in. long, thanks for all your prayers,” she wrote. Trina also posted photos of herself lying in the hospital bed with Edwin by her side, as well as a photo of her holding the baby.

“Wow...what a day!! Too tired to sleep and I can't stop staring at our perfect little boy. I couldn't possibly be a prouder mommy!” she wrote later on Thursday.

The newborn is the third child for Trina and the fifth for Edwin. However, this is the couple’s first child together in their two-year marriage.

The Advocate reported that the Edwardses have said “they wanted to share as many experiences as possible in the short amount of time they likely have together” because of the 51-year age gap.

In August last year, the couple told Fox 8 in New Orleans that they were planning to expand their family and would likely use in vitro fertilization. Edwards told the station he was planning to freeze his sperm in October 2012.

"We both love each other, and when two people love each other and they're married, it's natural to want a child and that's what we want to do,” Trina said.

Edwin Edwards is famous for a corruption scandal during his time in office that led to jail time after four terms as Louisiana governor. Edwards was found guilty on 17 counts of racketeering, extortion, money laundering, mail fraud and wire fraud in 2001. He served time for a decade in Fort Worth, Texas, and then in Oakdale, La. During his sentence, he filed for divorce from his second wife, Candy.

He married Trina Scott in 2011 after he was released from federal prison. According to WWLTV, Trina met Edwards when she visited him in prison.

Edwin and Trina Edwards are slated to star in a reality show on A&E called “The Governor’s Wife,” following Trina’s life as the wife of an 85-year-old man and mother to his children who are older than she is. The show’s description reads: "Between school projects, running for president of the Homeowner's Association, fending off skeptics who think she's a gold digger, and thoughts of adding a baby of their own to the mix, the Edwards clan truly represents a new take on the modern family."

The show was set to air this year but was delayed until summer for unspecified reasons.
