Sources have indicated that game studio Eidos Montreal has decided to cancel plans for the sequel to 2016’s “Deus Ex: Mankind Divided.” The studio, which is owned by Square Enix, will now focus on two major upcoming releases instead, one of which is a “Guardians of the Galaxy” game.

Last week, it was announced that Square Enix has signed on for a multi-game, multi-year deal with Marvel. The first game in this partnership has been dubbed as “The Avengers Project,” which was announced with a short teaser trailer. The game is primarily being developed by Crystal Dynamics. Eidos Montreal will be collaborating on the game as well.

Back in November, it was leaked that a sequel to “Rise of the Tomb Raider” was in the works. It was even said that the game was entitled “Shadow of the Tomb Raider.” It was also revealed that Eidos Montreal would be developing the “Tomb Raider” sequel instead of Crystal Dynamics.

With Eidos Montreal having its hands full already, there appears to be no more room for a “Deus Ex” sequel. Sales performance of “Mankind Divided” was actually also underwhelming which is why the studio has decided to put the franchise on hiatus, according to Eurogamer.

Eurogamer also learned that while a small team from Eidos Montreal is working with Crystal Dynamics on “The Avengers Project,” it is also in “early stages of production” for a “Guardians of the Galaxy” game. Eidos Montreal will be leading the development of that game.

As for what this means for the “Deus Ex” franchise, it does look like fans won’t be getting a new game in quite some time. Square Enix was also reached for comment about these rumors, and it responded with a statement sent to Kotaku.

“While we are still working on expanding the ‘Deus Ex Universe,’ along with creating new content and updates for ‘Deus Ex: Mankind Divided,’ we’re also devoting our talents towards working with Crystal Dynamics and Marvel on ‘The Avengers Project,’” the company said.
