NBC TV show “Emerald City” is already generating a lot of buzz after its official trailer released online last week. The fantasy series is a reimagining of L. Frank Baum’s classic tale of “The Wonderful Wizard Of Oz.”

Although many of the original tale’s characters are the same – for example, a Kansas-born farm girl named Dorothy Gale (Adria Arjona) gets swept off in a tornado and lands in the magical city of Oz – a lot of details about these characters have changed.

For starters, Dorothy isn’t just a farm girl. The trailer reveals that she may be more than just a simple girl. Furthermore, Oz is at the center of a battle between science and magic and Dorothy becomes inevitably part of this war. In fact, she may be the only one who can stop it.

Then there is the Wizard (Vincent D'Onofrio) who is starkly different from the one in the original story. He has banned magic in Oz and accidentally arrived in the city a long time ago.

Perhaps the most surprising aspect of NBC’s “Emerald City” is the fact that the Scarecrow (Oliver Jackson-Cohen) has a love affair with Dorothy. She finds him in a field fixed on a crucifix-like structure. And he doesn’t remember who he is. The TV show will show him unlock the secrets of his forgotten past.

Of course, “Emerald City” would be nothing without the witches. Dorothy kills the witch of the East when she lands in Oz. Her sisters, the witch of the West and North, will soon learn of her death. While the opium-loving witch of the West is on a journey of redemption, the witch of the North has forsaken her powers in order to live under the Wizard’s rule.
