Social networking giant Facebook has acquired Amsterdam-based software design firm Sofa as part of their strategy to boost their product design talent. Reuters

Facebook, which is working on an iPad specific version of its website, is planning to release an app optimized for the iPad in coming weeks.

Facebook, the social networking site is in the final stage of testing the iPad app, the New York Times reported. The app has been under development for more than a year and should be available in the App Store for free within weeks.

Mark Zuckerberg, company’s chief executive and founder has been heavily invested in the process and has overseen design decisions and the app’s unique features, a person who works with Facebook said.

People who have seen the application said it has a slick design specifically tailored for the iPad and its touch screen interface, Apple Insider reported. The company's developers have focused in particularly on revamping the Facebook Chat and Groups features.

Facebook is working on an iPad specific version of its website, but the timing of the update is not unclear.

Apple CEO Apple Steve Jobs last year invited Zuckerberg for dinner to discuss the issue over the Facebook terms for the assimilation of Apple's Ping social music discovery service with its own social network.
