Brazilian judoka Felipe Kitadai broke the Olympic bronze medal he earned on Saturday while taking it into the shower, his team spokesperson said Monday.

Kitadai, 23, placed third during the 6-kilogram category on Saturday, beating out Italy's Elio Verde for the bronze win at the London Olympics. He was so excited about his win, the spokeswoman told Reuters, that he carried the medal around with him, even in the shower.

"He was taking a shower with the medal when he dropped it," the spokeswoman told Reuters. "He then slept with the medal and realized later that it was broken. It wasn't a very smart thing to do."

Kitadai's medal was broken at the top where the ribbon loops through a hoop.

According to Reuters, Olympic officials will give a replacement bronze medal to Kitadai thanks to requests made by the Brazilian Olympic Committee.
