Are you a fan of Joss Whedon’s cult classic “Firefly?” So are we. Although the cowboys in space-themed show debuted in 2002 and only lasted one season, the series quickly developed a loyal fanbase and many are still missing the action-packed adventures of Mal, Inara, Jayne and Wash.

A Windows PC and Mac version of “Firefly Online,” an online RPG based on Joss Whedon’s series, will launch in summer 2014. The game is currently in development by Spark Plug Games and Quantum Mechanix. Players will take on the role of a Firefly ship captain whose goal is to recruit crew members, lead missions and interact with online users by trading items and completing tasks.

Io9 reported that the title’s “Free Flight Engine” will give users a “3D interface that includes whizzy in-universe guides around planets that the player can interact with.” Andy Gore, CEO of Quantum Mechanix strongly believed that the game would find its audience, but first he had to prove that his company was the best developer for the job. Gore and his team worked hard on creating a detailed setting that stayed true to the show's vast backdrop. “If you could imagine the map of the universe, complete with the nebula gases in 3D, with all the planet renders that you can zoom in, zoom out and fly through, it looks utterly amazing.”

“Firefly Online” is also set to launch on iOS and Android tablets and smartphones during the same timeframe. Are you a fan of the popular series? Will you play the game? Leave a comment below.
