Delta Air Lines is making it more convenient for its customers to keep track of their luggage. The American airline has introduced a new feature to its Fly Delta iOS app that shows a map view of the location of its customers’ bags.
Announcing the news on Delta’s News Hub, Delta Air Lines communications coordinator Ashton Morrow wrote on Tuesday that the new feature is going to provide a means for travelers to keep track of their luggage’s journey from the airport to the plane and from one plane to another.
The new map for the Fly Delta app works with the airline’s Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) bag tags that are already available at 84 airports in the country. Delta promised that it is expanding its RFID tracking technology’s reach into international stations in the coming months, so even international travelers can track their bags using the Fly Delta app.
The RFID tags were introduced this past April and what this technology does is provide markers for the luggage on when they were last scanned in the airport. The “last known location” is what is shown in the Delta Fly app.
According to MacRumors, once the app is updated, users will be able to keep track of their luggage’s journey through a zoomed out map view of the U.S. Each scan or step of the luggage in each airport is marked by a pin on the map. The bag’s current location, on the other hand, is marked by a suitcase icon. Clicking on this icon will display more information about the bag’s status.
“We’re the first carrier to offer this level of visibility. From the moment our customers drop off their bag, we want them to know we’re looking out for it every step of the way and working to take the stress out of flying one innovation at a time,” Delta’s Senior Vice President – Airline Operations and Airport Customer Service Bill Lentsch said.
Apart from the tracking system, the new update for the iOS app also combines the “Today” view and the boarding pass of customers in one screen. Moreover, seat, gate and flight details are now automatically updated. Morrow also mentioned that the Fly Delta update comes with bug fixes and performance enhancements.
