Jeff Conaway, the former star of the widely acclaimed TV series “Taxi” and the popular film “Grease” is in a coma in a hospital following a drug overdose, according to his manager.

Phil Brock said Conaway, now aged 60, was found unconscious on May 11, possibly after ingesting pain pills.

He is in critical condition in a hospital in Encino, Calif., and his recovery is not certain, Brock said.

Conaway, who has had a long-term drug abuse problem, was part of the TV reality show Celebrity Rehab in 2008, in which he discussed his addiction to drugs and alcohol.

Brock described Conaway as a gentle soul who has been unable to exorcise his demons.

Conaway is perhaps best remembered as playing Bobby Wheeler, the vain struggling actor/hack in the series “Taxi.”
