A crane collapse in Shanghai on Wednesday killed four workers and injured another two, according to state news agency Xinhua.

Four workers died and another two were injured Wednesday after a crane collapsed at a construction site of the Beijing-Shanghai High-speed Railway.

A 10-ton gantry crane collapsed at a construction site of the Beijing-Shanghai High-speed Railway at 6 pm in Jiading District of Shanghai, Xinhua said, citing police as saying.

All the victims were sheltering in a small house under the crane from rain, Xinhua quoted Li Jingbao, 36, who witnessed the accident.

The conditions of the injured were unavailable as of 11 pm, the report said.

Police have cordoned off the site. The investigation into the cause of the accident is underway.

The 1,318-km railway is scheduled to open in 2010, with a speed up to 350 km per hour.
