The FTSE 100 share index edged up on Monday by 9.2 points to 5,702.1 (up 0.16 per cent).

ITV lost 6.8 per cent, whilst Brtish Airways dropped 2.4 per cent thanks to the continuing chaos at the new Heathrow Terminal 5.

Commodities did well with miners BHP Billiton up 1.3 per cent, Rio Tinto up 1.3 per cent, Kazakhmys up 2.6 per cent and Antofagasta up 3.8 per cent.

Oil companies Royal Dutch Shell and BP both rose 1.7 and 1.8 per cent respectively, while gas company BG Group rose 2.3 per cent.

The story among banks was mixed with Barclays up 0.7 per cent, HSBC up 0.9 per cent and HBOS up 3.7 per cent. Royal Bank of Scotland and Standard Chartered however dropped 0.7 and 2.4 per cent respectively.

Friends Provident was up 2.9 per cent after rejecting a £3.5 billion bid from JC Flowers, Tesco however dropped 2.9 per cent.

Pharmaceutical company AstraZeneca increased 2.0 per cent.
