U.S. Rep. Gabrielle Giffords has officially been released Wednesday from a hospital in Houston and is set to receive outpatient treatment.

Giffords, who has been recovering from a gunshot wound to her head since January, will be assisted by a 24-hour health provider at home.

TIRR Memorial Hermann Hospital's chief medical officer said Congresswoman Giffords has shown clear, continuous improvements from the moment she arrived at TIRR five months ago.

Dr. Gerard Francisco continued We are very excited that she has reached the next phase of her rehabilitation and can begin outpatient treatment. We have no doubt that she will continue to make significant strides in her recovery.

On Sunday, photos of a smiling Giffords werereleased on Facebook.
