Veteran actor Max Von Sydow has joined the cast of the hit HBO fantasy series “Game of Thrones.” The “Exorcist” star is set to take over the role of the Three-Eyed Raven, last seen in the Season 4 finale.

E! News reported Von Sydow has been cast to replace Struan Rodger, who originally portrayed the character . He was seen briefly in the Season 4 finale opposite young actor Isaac Hempstead-Wright, who plays Bran Stark.

The recurring character appeared in Bran’s dreams before he met him in person in the closing scenes of Season 4. In the world of “Game of Thrones,” it is not uncommon for people to have power to take over the bodies of animals and other living things.

Neither Bran nor the Three-Eyed Raven was part of Season 5 as the show focused on other characters. Entertainment Weekly said Von Sydow’s character won’t have a lot of screen time in the new season, but he is expected to play a crucial role.

Von Sydow’s casting news comes on the heels of another casting. Ian McShane has signed up for Season 6. While Sydow is playing a familiar role, McShane’s character is still wrapped in mystery.

Also much of Season 6 is still a mystery due to the absence of a book reference. The previous seasons were aired years after the book series, “A Song of Ice and Fire” by George R.R. Martin, were first published. Most of the material in the first five books has already been used in the hugely popular show. Fans are now eagerly awaiting the release of the sixth book, titled “Winds of Winter,” in the hope it will provide spoilers for the upcoming season.

“Game of Thrones” Season 6 is currently in production and is expected to air in spring. No exact date has been announced for the release of “Winds of Winter.”
