U.S. Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner said on Thursday that a strong dollar was very important to the United States.

A strong dollar is very important to this country, I mean that, and it's very important that people recognize it, he told a news forum at the Newseum.

He also said it was important for American policy-makers to persuade the rest of the world that the United States intends to live within its means, rather than spend as freely and run up deficits as it did in the past.
