A 12-year-old girl from South Los Angeles has been permanently blinded in one eye caused by an illegal firework on July 4.

Someone set off an illegal firecracker device, which lodged between the girl's right eye and eyelid and then went off, according to Los Angeles Fire Department.

Doctors at Children's Hospital Los Angeles were unable to save her eyesight despite extensive emergency surgery.

The girl had been playing with a sparkler in front of her home when the firework exploded. The incident is currently under investigation by LAPD.
