There’s no Bruce Wayne (David Mazouz) without his trusty butler Alfred Pennyworth (Sean Pertwee).

Mazouz recently posted a photo on his social media page showing a behind-the-scenes moment of his character hanging out with Alfred. The two looked quite grim in front of a chess board. The actors could be playing a battle of wits against each other in between takes, but this could also be a Bruce and Alfred scene from an upcoming episode.

Bruce is definitely going to need the help and protection of Alfred now that the Joker (Cameron Monaghan) will be coming back to life.

Executive producer John Stephens even told Screener TV that the Joker will be going head-to-head with Bruce this time around. “[Bruce] really gets pulled into the Jerome story full-tilt. We really see a big step that he takes, another chink in the Batman philosophy, another brick in that wall gets built, in episode 14 - and it gets built via Jerome. And Jerome will really be standing in for the person we know probably is out there,” he said. “To us it's very significant that that guy ends up informing this part of the Batman mythology.”

Bruce is still too young to embrace his Batman persona. According to Mazouz, his character’s transformation into the masked vigilante will take place only when he starts to physically look like Batman. “We’re in Season 3 right now, and I’m fifteen. So I think it just depends on what I look like,” he told Assignment X. “If I’m 20 and I still look like I’m 15, then I don’t necessarily have to throw on the cape, but if I’m 17 and I look like I’m 25 – I think it really just depends on what my growth process is and when I start to look like Batman.”

“Gotham” airs every Monday at 8 p.m. EST on Fox.
