Jim Gordon (Ben McKenzie) hasn’t really been lucky in love, but will “Gotham” Season 4 change his romantic history?

Gordon will be teaming up with the most unlikely ally next season, Sofia Falcone (Crystal Reed), as he tries to take down the Penguin (Robin Lord Taylor). However, executive producer John Stephens teased that it won’t be purely business between the two of them on the Fox drama.

“We’re going to see Jim make, in some ways, big steps toward I guess what you would call the commissionership,” Stephens told Entertainment Weekly. “But also we’re going to see Jim, in his quest to save the city, cross different ethical lines than he ever did before. It’s going to bring him to an ethical nadir that we haven’t seen him at, and it’s going to be told through the context of a relationship that he has with Sofia Falcone, the daughter of Don Falcone, who’s played by Crystal Reed this year. And that’s going to be a really compelling and interesting relationship.”

Meanwhile, McKenzie said Gordon needs to rely on Sofia because there’s “an awful lot going on” and the Penguin has become more powerful than ever. “He’s licensing crimes. He’s basically usurped the law completely and controls what crime is permitted in Gotham. Against that tide, Jim is left alone. No one is on his side including Harvey,” he explained to Fansided.

Gordon won’t be the only one gunning to bring down the Penguin. The Riddler (Cory Michael Smith) is also out for his blood. However, things will not be easy for the Riddler since his razor sharp mind was affected after being trapped in a frozen cube. Speaking to Screen Rant about his character, Smith said that the Riddler is going to hit a low point when Season 4 opens.

“You know, we play a lot with Edward having identity issues, and so this is another identity crisis for him. His mind isn’t functioning at the level that it was. Whether that can be cured or fixed, he doesn’t know, but his computation is not as it was. So what does that make him now?” he said.

“The thing that he had was his intelligence and his ability to trick people and outsmart people, and so he doesn’t have that anymore. So what is there? So he goes on a new quest. I’m really happy, because it allows for a little comedy. Some of the old comedy we had with Ed, we get to find again. Some of his physical and mental ineptitude is back,” he continued.

“Gotham” Season 4 will be released by Fox on Sept. 21.
