Things aren’t looking so good for Jo (Camilla Luddington) and Alex (Justin Chambers) after the “Grey’s Anatomy” Season 12 finale Thursday. They have been together for quite some time, but Alex just can’t get Jo to commit — and there’s good reason for that, according to Luddington.

Episode 24 reveals that Jo has been hiding a massive secret from Alex and the rest of the Grey Sloan Memorial Hospital crew. During a night out at the local dive, she shares with fellow physicians Stephanie (Jerrika Hinton) and Andrew (Giacomo Gianniotti) that she is still legally married to a mystery man from whom she’s been hiding. She is too afraid to approach him about divorce, Luddington said in an interview with Variety.

The actress told the publication she has no clue about the identity of the husband to which showrunner Shonda Rhimes has her hitched. However, she is convinced he’s “extremely dangerous.” So what does Jo’s marriage mean in terms of her future with Alex? Luddington couldn’t say for certain what Rhimes’ plans were for Season 13, but she is sure of one thing: Jo loves Alex very much.

“I think she’s absolutely in love with Alex, and she absolutely wants to have a family with him,” Luddington said. “I think she would have had that ring on her finger several episodes ago, but it’s this one massive thing that has prevented her from marrying him. I think it’s heartbreaking for Alex and also heartbreaking for her.”

While wedding bells may not be in the future for Alex and Jo, there are several other “Grey’s Anatomy” stars basking in marital bliss. While Jo dealt with the fallout associated with declining Alex’s proposal, Owen (Kevin McKidd) and Amelia (Caterina Scorsone) prepared to make their way down the aisle. In true “Grey’s Anatomy” fashion, the wedding hit a few speed bumps along the way, but the couple did, in time, tie the knot.

Little is known about Season 13 at present. However, one thing is clear: As has been the case in the past few seasons of “Grey’s Anatomy,” more integral cast members will be leaving the series. Sara Ramirez, who plays Callie Torres on the show, won’t be returning in the new season. She confirmed the news on Twitter Thursday, telling fans she was “deeply grateful” to have had the opportunity to be in the show. Ramirez sent her love to her co-stars, adding that she will always be “a part of the Shondaland family!”

“Grey’s Anatomy” Season 13 will premiere on ABC this fall.
