“Grey’s Anatomy” will tackle a new subject during the upcoming, Season 12 episode of the hit ABC series: Gun control.

In the synopsis for episode 20, titled “Trigger Happy,” it is revealed that the doctors of Grey Sloan Memorial Hospital will “work frantically to save a young boy who was accidentally shot.” And in a sneak-peek video for the forthcoming drama, it’s revealed who pulled the trigger on Brandon.

“Brandon’s injuries are severe,” Owen (Kevin McKidd) tells the mother of the patient in the promo. Amelia (Caterina Scorsone) adds that the bullet hit his spinal cord just as Brandon’s baby sitter Stacey (Brianne Tju) walks in.

The mothers ask Stacey if she was shot at too and whether or not the police found the person who opened fire at the young boys. That’s when Stacey reveals the disturbing truth that the kids found the gun hidden in the house.

“We were just playing,” a friend of Brandon’s explains. “It went off.”

The issue of gun control will then sweep the hospital, getting several of the scrub-donning surgeons fired up — including Jo (Camilla Luddington) and Alex (Justin Chambers). The couple, who are no strangers to disagreeing, will argue over policies regarding firearms.

“When are people going to learn?” Alex says during surgery only to have Jo bark back that like Brandon’s mother she also has a gun. “It makes me feel safer,” she explains. But Alex isn't buying it.

“Does it?” he questions.

This isn’t the first time showrunner Shonda Rhimes has woven gun control into her storylines. During the Season 6 finale, Rhimes had a gunman pay Grey Sloan a visit — and needless to say, no one walked away without a physical or emotional injury.

The creator explained that when she initially pitched the big, finale blowout, she “seemed fine.” However, as she inched closer and closer to the chaos, her emotions began to unravel.

“On almost a daily basis, I would come into work and throw myself down on the sofa in the middle of the office and burst into tears,” she wrote in her blog, explaining that the plot was almost to chaotic for her to bear.

With that said, it looks like viewers should prepare themselves for another gut-wrenching episode.

“Grey’s Anatomy” airs Thursdays at 8 p.m. EDT on ABC.
