Halloween came a week early for some furry creatures in Manila on Sunday, with the Philippine Animal Welfare Society holding a costume show for pets.

Pets were wearing costumes ranging from adorable fairies to scary Grim Reapers and did some basic tricks for the audience. Some owners even joined their doggie companions and dressed up in matching costumes.

Anna Cabrera, executive director of the Philippine Animal Welfare Society, said the event was intended to promote proper pet handling.

The participation of people in fancy events like this, although it may seem trivial or shallow, it's actually an entry point for them to learn more serious issues about animal welfare. It leads us to tell them more about responsible pet ownership, and they tend to care for their pets more when they are exposed to events like this, she said.
