'Until Dawn'
"Until Dawn" is one of the scariest games to play on Halloween. SCEA/Supermassive Games

Halloween is a Saturday this year, which means you have plenty of time for marathoning horror movies or playing scary games. If games are more your thing, there's no shortage of nightmarish titles to provide plenty of gasps. Here are just a few of the most bloodcurdling, best played with friends in a dark room.

"Amnesia: The Dark Descent" (PC, Mac)

The best horror games don't rely on jump-scares to frighten people. They skillfully use music, lighting, atmosphere and design to create a truly memorable experience. That's why IGN, Kotaku and Tech Insider all love "Amnesia: The Dark Descent." The first-person survival horror game follows Daniel as he explores a mysterious castle. One clever gameplay mechanic involves managing Daniel's sanity. There are no weapons, so don't expect a scenario like "Resident Evil" where you can shoot your fears away. The game is on sale for Halloween for just $4.99 on Steam. Fans cause also purchase the "Amnesia Collection," which includes the sequel, "Amnesia: A Machine for Pigs" for $8.74.

"Five Nights at Freddy's" (Android, iOS)

The mobile game does not bother too much with setting up the scares. "Five Nights at Freddy's" follows more modern horror fare by employing jump-scares to great effect. Luckily, smart game design elevates the tactic to create an incredibly fun experience.

"Fatal Frame 2: Crimson Butterfly" (PlayStation 3, Xbox)

In another clever approach to horror, twin sisters Mio and Mayu are armed with only a "Camera Obscura" that can be used to view and damage ghosts. The creepy abandoned village and tormented ghosts are perfect for Halloween. There's a remake available for the Wii and the latest installation in the franchise, "Fatal Frame: Maiden of Black Water" for the Wii U, was just released.

"Until Dawn" (PS4)

Reminiscent of "Cabin in the Woods," this game is perfect for hardcore horror fans. Every terror trope, rule or character messes with the player's expectations -- and it even does so with a sense of humor! The outcome of the game is up to the gamer's decisions throughout.

"Dead Space" (PC, PlayStation 3, Xbox 360)

"Dead Space" is a really fun action game with plenty of scares. It may not provide as much outright terror as some other games on the list, but "Dead Space" has many scenes that will have players jumping out of their seat. Creepy hallways and a good soundtrack help create a tense environment. It's recommended that gamers play the first game or its sequel, "Dead Space 2," while avoiding "Dead Space 3."
