House of Cards
Claire Underwood (Robin Wright) and Frank Underwood (Kevin Spacey) are cooking up something evil for “House of Cards” Season 5. Netflix

“One nation, Underwood.” These are the ominous words that President Frank Underwood (Kevin Spacey) shared with his wife, Claire (Robin Wright), as they cook up something sinister in their quest for power.

Netflix has just released a brand new trailer for “House of Cards” Season 5, and in it, Frank can be heard talking to his wife while several scenes play out simultaneously. “The American people don’t know what’s best for them,“ he tells her. ”I do. I know exactly what they need.”

The brief scenes showed the return of several major characters, including Doug Stamper (Michael Kelly), Will Conway (Joel Kinnaman), Tom Yates (Paul Sparks) and Catherine Durant (Jayne Atkinson).

“They’re like little children, Claire,” Frank continues in his spiel. “We have to hold their sticky fingers and wipe their filthy mouths. Teach them right from wrong. Tell what to think and how to feel and what to want. They even need help writing their wildest dreams. Crafting their worst fears. Lucky for them, they have me. They have you.”

It seemed like Frank is planning to lead America not just today, but in the years to come as he promises to hold office for six terms. “Underwood, 2016. 2020. 2024. 2028. 2032. 2036. One nation, Underwood,” he says.

Meanwhile, two new players will be introduced in Season 5. They are Oscar nominee Patricia Clarkson and Campbell Scott. According to The Hollywood Reporter, they have been cast for “major roles” next season, although details of their roles still remain a mystery for now. Their casting are the first additions made by new showrunners Frank Pugliese and Melissa James Gibson, who joined the series as senior writers in Season 3. They have taken over the reins from show creator Beau Willimon, who exited the show in January.

One of the biggest twists fans are expecting this Season 5 is the surprise death of Frank. But when Kelly, the actor who plays Underwood’s right-hand man Doug Stamper, was asked by Deadline if it’s finally Underwood’s time to go, he gave a cryptic answer. “You lose characters that you love. We almost lost Frank, and I always have faith in the writers that no matter what road we go down, we're going to come back to what the show is,” he said.

Some people even suspect that his ever-loyal character would betray Frank and be the one who ends up killing him, but Kelly does not see that scenario ever happening. If there’s one thing Kelly is sure of, it is that Doug would do anything for Frank. “Those two men trust each other to the ends of the Earth. They're the only two people that each of them could count on,” he told CNN. “You've never seen Doug turn on Frank. We've never seen Frank turn on Doug. And they trust each other to the ends of the Earth so that's where Doug belongs. That's where he is. That's where he thrives in life.”

“House of Cards” Season 5 will premiere on Netflix on May 30.
