U.S. Speaker of the House Speaker John Boehner is in Iraq meeting with top Iraqi officials, according to Agence France-Presse.

“We can confirm that Speaker Boehner is in Iraq today, meeting with senior [government of Iraq] officials,” embassy spokesman David Ranz.

Ranz declined to provide further details on Boehner’s visit.

Boehner, a Republican from Ohio, has just completed a two-week battle with President Obama and Democrats over the federal budget.
Visits by senior US government officials to war zones are typically shrouded in secrecy due to security concerns.

It is not clear who Boehner will meet with, how long his trip will last or if other congressmen joined him.

This is Boehner’s first trip to Iraq since being elected speaker of the house last November.
