With the death of Wes Gibbons (Alfred Enoch), Laurel Castillo (Karla Souza) is left alone to fend for herself and their unborn baby in “How to Get Away With Murder” Season 4. But why did her dad conspire to have Wes killed? Why commit such a cruel act?

Executive producer Pete Nowalk told TV Line that fans will get their answers when the show returns. “This is the perfect way to reveal more of where [Laurel] comes from,” Nowalk said. “It will make a lot of sense why he ordered Wes to be killed. It’s fun to dig more into what Laurel’s backstory is and create a mystery around her family.”

Nowalk earlier told The Hollywood Reporter that it would be interesting to see how Laurel acts when she finds out her family is behind Wes’ murder. “We have to start the season wondering does Laurel have any idea that her dad basically killed Wes, and what is she going to do about that if she does?” Nowalk said. “Wes was the heart of the show, and now he’s dead. I think someone has to work to still solve his murder, because it's unsolved. Annalise feels like that’s just what they have to live with, but I don’t think Laurel wants to give up on that answer yet.”

Meanwhile, Nowalk told Variety that they are still figuring out ways to get Enoch back to reprise his role as Wes. Since Wes is dead, Nowalk said they might bring Wes back via flashbacks.

“We’ve only written the first four episodes, and he’s working abroad on another show, so right now we don’t have specific plans to bring him back, but I’m really hoping it happens,” he said.

Nowalk also teased the surprising changes in the lives of some of the characters. “Some people will be in a surprising place, but some people will just be enjoying the quiet, and we’re going to see some major changes for them over the first half of the season,” he said.

“How to Get Away with Murder” will return for Season 4 on Sept. 28 at 10 p.m. EDT on ABC.
