Tuesday was hard enough for fans of great TV, and of Hulu shows, with “The Mindy Project” releasing its final episode, but then Hulu had to go and make it even harder by announcing that the Julie Klausner-created “Difficult People” had been canceled.

The underrated, New York City-set half-hour comedy centered on best friends Julie (Klausner) and Billy (Billy Eichner), who both dreamed of making it in the entertainment world, but who also always stood in their own ways.

Filled with witty banter and ahead-of-its-time pop culture references, the series stood out amongst the rest to its following of loving, diehard viewers. Klausner and Eichner had the sort of chemistry that most shows could only dream of having, and then added in their impeccable comedic timing on top of the already intelligent writing and the show was a hilarious force to be reckoned with for three seasons.

After the announcement of the show’s cancellation Tuesday night, the cast began to take to social media to thank fans and share memories.

“Yes it’s true. DIFFICULT PEOPLE has come to an end,” Eichner tweeted. “Thanks to many people but above all my friend, @julieklausner. A singular comedic voice & the funniest person I know. I cannot WAIT to see what Julie creates next. Thanks to all of you Difficult People out there who watched.”

Andrea Martin, who played Julie’s mom Marilyn, said she was “proud” to have been a part of the “special show with a unique voice” and that she was sad the series would no longer be a “showcase” for the cast.

“We love you, Andrea Martin,” Eichner tweeted in reply to her. “Not everyday [sic] you get to work with a bonafide comedy legend."

Though Julie herself (AKA Klausner) hasn’t tweeted much since the news was shared, she did reply with a heart emoji to actor Jesse Tyler Ferguson after he tweeted his sadness over the cancellation, but also his excitement to see what Klausner does next.

As this show was her creation, she’s likely still wrapping her head around everything and figuring out exactly what she wants to say to her, and the show’s, fans.

As for some of the others of the show’s cast and crew, here’s what they had to say:

Gabourey Sidibe (Denise): “#DifficultPeople is truly one of my favorite jobs with my favorite group of people. I’m sad to see it go but grateful I got to work with such talented people. Thank you @julieklausner and @billyeichner for so much fun and heart for 3 seasons.”

Shakina Nayfack (Lola): “No amount of sadness can compete with the pride I have for Lola and the whole @DifficultOnHulu family."

Writer Jake Fogelnest: “Proud to have worked on something that NEVER jumped the shark. I know a lot of you will be upset, but just think: now we get to see what @julieklausner does next.”

All 28 episodes of “Difficult People” are now streaming on Hulu for your enjoyment.
