Jack Wilshere gave Arsenal the perfect start in their crucial Champions League Group F meeting with Marseille at the Emirates Stadium with a goal in the opening minute. The midfielder was given license to run unopposed down the right flank in the opening seconds of the clash before cutting back inside defender Lucas Mendes and finishing precisely into the far top corner with his left foot to leave goalkeeper Steve Mandanda with no chance.

Arsenal went into the contest top of their group, but level on points with Napoli and only three points ahead of Borussia Dortmund, who they beat last time out. A win would see the Premier League leaders through to the knockout phase, if Dortmund fail to win at home to Napoli.

The goal also came as a boost to Wilshere. With injuries continue to bother him, the England international has so far failed to hit top form this campaign, despite the impressive results of his team. He has also been playing, as he is against Marseille, in an unfamiliar role on the right.
