“Jane the Virgin” Season 3 introduced a new character - Jane’s cousin Catalina (Sofia Pernas) in Chapter 50.

At first, Catalina seemed too good to be true. Jane warmed up to her in an instant, although Michael Cordero (Brett Dier) had his reservations. Jane’s ex and baby daddy Rafael Solano (Justin Baldoni) also warmed up to Catalina - a little too much. The two had a “spark” and even spent a romantic evening together.

Jane’s grandmother Alba (Ivonne Col) was also charmed by Catalina, but Catalina’s comment about Alba stealing her husband Mateo away from her sister really infuriated her. In the end, Alba warned Jane to be careful with Catalina because she doesn’t trust her. According to Romper, it’s a good enough reason to be wary of her cousin.

On the other hand, Bustle noted that Catalina might have used Jane to get to Rafael. But for what reason?

Earlier, showrunner Jennie Snyder Urman told Indie Wire that it was time for Rafael to have a new romantic interest. Before Jane got married, they let Rafael hold the torch for her, but now that she’s no longer, it’s time for him to have “new, full and interesting relationships.”

“It… let me have more fun with Rafael because I was kind of sick of seeing him moon. He’s a great-looking guy and he’s going to have ladies in his life, and he really did love Jane but I thought it was an important character step for him to watch Jane get married and to have that affect him too,” she said. “Because who would he be if he’s just constantly skulking around the background?”

Hopefully, Catalina won’t go breaking his heart the same way Jane and Petra Solano (Yael Grobglas) did in the past, but that might just be wishful thinking.

“Jane the Virgin” Season 3 airs every Monday at 9 p.m. EST on The CW.
