Jane Gloriana Villanueva (Gina Rodriguez) did not have a father figure growing up, since her mother Xo (Andrea Navedo) kept her father’s identity from her while her grandfather Mateo passed away early.

Knowing this, “Jane the Virgin” narrator Anthony Mendez decided to make his mysterious character as someone who looks at Jane in a paternal way. Show creator Jennie Snyder Urman already said that the Narrator is someone who is close to the Villanueva family, so Mendez took the liberty of making his Narrator a father figure.

“I didn’t [know there’d be a tie-in to the story], but when I auditioned for it, the first thing I noticed was that Jane didn’t have a father in her life,” Mendez told TV Guide. “So I kind of took a paternal, grandfather, uncle kind of role. Then I found out Jane was writing stories and I was like, ‘Oh, he’s a storyteller.’ But there is a certain parallel between the choices I made in interpreting the character and what she had in mind. I think that clicked when she heard it.”

The show has repeatedly been dropping hints about the Narrator’s identity throughout the series. During the Season 3 finale, the Narrator even made a comment about Xo’s wedding day look that made fans begin theorizing. “She looked perfect, at least to the people who loved her most — which includes me,” the Narrator said of Xo.

According to Pop Sugar, the most popular consensus is that Jane’s son Mateo is actually the Narrator, but many are also suspecting that he is Alba’s (Ivonne Col) dead husband, also named Mateo, who is telling the Villanueva ladies’ story from heaven.

Whatever the case, fans will have to wait until the show’s finale before learning the truth about the Narrator. “You’ll find out in the last episode of the series [who the Narrator] is,” Urman told Jet Magazine.

“Jane the Virgin” has already been renewed by The CW for Season 4, and its new schedule will now be every Friday at 9 p.m.
