While the Video Music Awards were airing on MTV Sunday night, many viewers missed Jessa (Duggar) Seewald and Jill (Duggar) Dillard’s return to television. The former “19 Kids and Counting” stars joined TLC’s documentary “Breaking the Silence,” which dealt with the issue of child sexual abuse. During the special, Jessa and Jill attended a seminar with their mother Michelle Duggar that was organized by Darkness Into Light, a group dedicated to ending child sexual abuse.

“Breaking the Silence” mostly focused on Erin Merryn, a survivor of abuse who is currently fighting to bring Erin’s Law to every state. The law would require schools to teach children about sexual abuse. The Duggars only appeared briefly during the documentary, but they spoke about the importance of educating people about abuse.

“I feel like this should be a discussion people are having, even regularly,” Jessa said after the seminar. “I think that it shouldn't be a taboo subject, that we should be bringing awareness to child sexual abuse and talking about this.”

While the special is thought to be a response to her brother Josh Duggar’s child molestation scandal, Cosmopolitan reports that the eldest Duggar sibling’s name was never brought up in the special. As previously reported, “19 Kids and Counting” was canceled last month after it was revealed that Josh, now 27, molested several young girls when he was a teenager. Jill, 24, and Jessa, 22, confirmed they were two of his victims on Fox News’ “The Kelly File" in June, but they didn’t talk about their experiences during the TLC special. Jessa and Jill spoke about the tools they were given to help communicate, set up boundaries and prevent abuse.

Jill, Jessa and Michelle all said that the experience was very educational. Jill noted that it was “amazing to understand” that other families went through similar experiences. Meanwhile, Jessa was thinking about the child that she is going to give birth to in the fall.

She said she was happy to learn “things I can do to be more aware, things I can do to set up boundaries and safeguards for my child and children, hopefully, in the future.”

Jessa is already planning a large family. Though she hasn’t given birth yet, she is planning her second child. She recently revealed that she and her husband Ben Seewald are planning to take an adoption class so they can bring another child into their home.
