Comediennes Kathy Griffin and Whoopi Goldberg were just two of a handful of A-list celebrities who arrived at the Temple Emanu-El in New York City to pay their respects at Joan Rivers' funeral on Sunday morning. Also in attendance were journalists Geraldo Rivera, Barbara Walters and Diane Sawyer.

Hours earlier, crowds of fans and media lined the streets of Manhattan's Upper East Side, where police had set up baricades. While Rivers previously wrote of lavish "red carpet" plans for her own funeral, Sunday's event was a private affair.

Rivers, 81, was a revolutionary actress and comedian known for paving the way for women in the industry. She died on Thursday at Mount Sinai Hospital following complications from surgery.
