John Legend is thankful for the assisted reproductive technology called In Vitro Fertilization (IVF) as it helped him and wife Chrissy Teigen fulfill their dream of becoming parents. However, the Oscar-winning singer has revealed that the process wasn’t easy for them.

Legend recently sat down with Cosmopolitan and opened up about the challenges he and Teigen faced during their four-year marriage. Among the things he discussed with the publication was their experience with IVF. “Having a baby is a big challenge for a couple, and going through that together strengthens your bond because if you make it though [having a child], you know you can make it through anything,” Legend said.

Legend then shared what pushed them to resort to IVF. “I think it’s especially difficult when you can’t conceive naturally. You want to feel like everything’s working properly and want everything to be perfect, but sometimes it’s not,” he said. ”I wouldn’t say we can’t conceive naturally, but I would say that it’s enough of a challenge where it felt like we needed help.”

Thanks to IVF, Legend and Teigen welcomed their now 16-month-old daughter Luna Simone Stephens on April 14, 2016. Due to the positive turnout, Legend admitted that they are considering using IVF again to have more kids. “[IVF] brought us Luna and hopefully, it will bring us a few more awesome kids, too,” he said.

This isn’t the first time that the couple openly discussed their decision to use technology to give birth to their offspring. Teigen spoke with People last year about her decision to have a girl for their first child. “I’ve made this decision. Not only am I having a girl, but I picked the girl from her little embryo. I picked her and was like, ‘Let’s put in the girl,’” she said.

Teigen also hinted at their plans of having more kids at the time when she said, “A boy will come along. We’ll get there too, so it’s not like we really have to pick.”

Meanwhile, aside from pregnancy issues, Teigen has also been receiving support from Legend after she decided to cut back on her alcohol consumption. “We’re always honest with each other, so we discuss everything that’s on our minds. When she was thinking about how she wanted to drink less, we talked about it. I just want to support her,” he said.
