Justin Bieber is no stranger to tattoos, but his latest bit of ink has raised a few eyebrows. The teen heartthrob got an eyeball on the inside of his left forearm and posted it to his Instagram account on Wednesday.

The 19-year Canadian singer stopped by Bang Bang Tattoos in New York City to pay tribute to his mother, Pattie Mallette. Bieber has had some very public ups and downs recently and he says his mother had always been by his side. The tattoo symbolizes how she is always “watching” over him, he wrote on Instagram Wednesday.

Tattoo artist Keith "Bang Bang" McCurdy, who did Bieber's work, talked to MTV News about the pop star’s new piece. "It felt like a good spot for it to sit for him. I didn't feel like it was bizarre at all. People often get an eye to symbolize many things,” the celebrity tattoo artist said.

“For him, it was just like his mother watching over, kind of like a protective thing. It's totally from mama. We were talking about how we both have tattoos for our mothers and how it's something you'll never regret."

Bang Bang rose to fame after he tattooed such stars as Rihanna and Katy Perry.

This isn’t the first time the tattoo artist has done work for Bieber, but unlike other times where the singer wasn’t exactly sure what he wanted, Bang Bang told MTV News there was no doubt in his mind when it came to the eye.

The eye isn’t Mallette’s, but instead the tattooer drew inspiration from a photograph of a model. “He always wants to think of his mom,” Bang Bang said. “He's like the rest of us: We're all mama's boys."
