Lamar Odom was devastated when news of the sudden death of longtime friend Jamie Sangouthai reached him. The former Los Angeles Lakers player is “beside himself” with grief and deeply affected with the loss of his pal, reports Us Weekly.

Odom was partying in Las Vegas when he got the news of Sangouthai’s death. Apparently the two hit a rough patch in their friendship a while back but sources told Us Weekly that Odom is still bereft over the news and feels that it could have happened to him. “It has really shaken him," said the source.

Sangouthai and Odom have known each other since high school. The two shared a passion for basketball and previously worked on a few business ventures together. Sangouthai also had a short stint on the reality series “Khloe and Lamar” and stood as one of Odom’s best men when the former basketball star married Khloe Kardashian.

An insider close to Khloe Kardashian told E!News, "It's been a wake-up call for Lamar as he realizes that he could personally be in a very different place if he was still as close to Jamie." The former basketball player is currently coping with the news of his friend's death surrounded by friends in Las Vegas.

Khloe Kardashian and best friend Malika Haqq also took to social media on Sunday to pay tribute to their friend. People reported Kardashian tweeting, "When does it stop? RIP Jamie Sangouthai.” Haqq also shared a throwback group picture of Odom, Sangouthai, Kardashian and herself, writing: "Thru good and bad times life shows us every spirit matters and leaves a print on the hearts of others after they have passed... RIP Jamie Sangouthai #GodHelpUsAll."

Jamie Sangouthai died of a heroin overdose after medics rushed him to a hospital in downtown Los Angeles on Sunday. He was 37.
