Laurence Fishburne has just been cast as Perry White in "Man of Steel," the first installment of the "Superman" film reboot, Entertainment Weekly reports.

The "Matrix" star will take on the legendary role of "Daily Planet" editor-in-chief. Jackie Cooper and Frank Langella played Perry in previous "Superman" films.

The casting marks the first time an African American actor has taken the role in any adaption of the popular comic book series, the L.A. Times points out.

The last Superman film was 2006's "Superman Returns." The final installment of the original film series dating back to 1978.

On June 7, Fishburne announced his departure from "CSI: Crime Scene Investigation," after nearly three seasons playing Dr. Ray Langston.

Directed by Zack Synder and produced by Christopher Nolan, "Man of Steel" stars British actor Henry Cavill as Superman and Amy Adams as Lois Lane. Kevin Costner, Diane Lane and Michael Shannon also star in the film.

"Man of Steel" is slated for a June 14, 2013 release, with principal photography expected to begin this summer.
