LeAnn Rimes and Eddie Cibrian’s affair in 2009 stunned the world, not least of all Rimes’ then husband Dean Sheremet. Sheremet, who has mostly remained silent since then, revealed in a recent interview that finding out that Rimes was cheating on him with Cibrian was the last thing he ever imagined happening and that he and Rimes no longer speak.

Cibrian’s now ex-wife Brandi Glanville has often spoke of the affair, alleging in her memoir “Drinking and Tweeting” that she knew something was going on between Rimes and her husband when she observed them flirting on the set of their Lifetime movie “Northern Lights.” For her part, Rimes has said that she was disgusted with herself over the dramatic affair, which ended when she and Cibrian left their respective spouses for each other.

Rimes and Sheremet married in 2002, when the country singer was only 19 years old. In an interview with Access Hollywood, Sheremet said that the news caught him off-guard and derailed his entire life.

"The affair was, I mean, of all the things that I could have ever imagined would have happened, I never would have thought," Sheremet said. "I guess you have that assumption that the person that you're with would never do something like that. How close we were, I just never saw it coming. If anyone would have seen it, I thought that I would have. It's hard to delineate where I stopped and LeAnn began,” he said of their marriage. “We were so intertwined. I was husband, I was father, I was manager. There were so many different roles, and it was hard to juggle all of those things when you just want to be in love with someone.”

Contrary to Sheremet’s claims that the affair came out of the blue, at the time of their separation, friends of Rimes said that the split wasn’t solely due to the affair and that “there have been issues brewing for months prior to meeting Eddie on set.”

Sheremet, who got remarried in 2011 to photographer Sarah Silver, says that he’s since bounced back. “I don't know [if I] dodged a bullet ... every relationship you learn from," he said. "I think that was my learning experience of what I needed to do to pick myself up and kind of do what I needed to do."

Speaking of his current relationship with Rimes, he says that they are no longer in touch but that it’s not a reflection of any anger.

"We don't really talk," he said. "I have no animosity toward her. I have nothing but love for her, and I really wish her the best. But we don't really talk that much. There's not really a need to. I don't really know what we would talk about."

Cibrian and Rimes announced in August that they had signed on for a reality show of their own on VH1, tentatively titled “LeAnn & Eddie.”
