American comedian and actress Lily Tomlin and her partner, writer Jane Wagner, married on New Year’s Eve.

The news of the wedding was first revealed by Chicago Tribune gossip columnist Liz Smith, who is a friend of the pair.

“My longtime friends, Lily Tomlin and her love, Jane Wagner, got married on the eve 2014. My wish is that their happiness will be as great as their combined talents,” Smith reportedly said.

The couple wed in a private ceremony in Los Angeles on New Year’s Eve.

According to reports, Tomlin said she had been considering marriage after same-sex marriage again became legal in California last June, after it had been banned after a U.S. Supreme Court ruling.

“We’re thinking we’ll get married,” Tomlin reportedly said last August. “You don’t really need to get married, but marriage is awfully nice. Everybody I know who got married, they say it really makes a difference. They feel very, very happy about it.”

Tomlin, 74, and Wagner, 78, have been together for the past 42 years. They met in 1971 and worked together on Tomlin’s comedy album “This Is a Recording.”

Tomlin rose to fame in 1969 on the sketch comedy show “Laugh-In.” She went on to star in movies like “Nine to Five” and “All of Me,” and she appeared on episodes of “Murphy Brown” and “The West Wing.” She also earned an Oscar nomination for best supporting actress in 1975’s musical drama “Nashville.”

Wagner was the writer of Tomlin’s one-woman show, “The Search for Signs of Intelligent Life in the Universe,” for which Tomlin won the 1986 Tony Award for Best Actress in a Play. She also wrote the screenplay for Tomlin's movie, “The Incredible Shrinking Woman.”
