Manchester United marked Sir Alex Ferguson's 25th anniversary in charge with a 1-0 win over Sunderland at Old Trafford.

It wasn't an emphatic result, or performance, by any means but it did serve Sir Alex with the win he cherishes over and above everything else.

The club paid tribute to the Scot by renaming the great North Stand at Old Trafford the Sir Alex Ferguson Stand. And it couldn't have been more fitting.

As usual, Sir Alex sprang a surprise with his starting 11, dropping Wayne Rooney into the hole while starting with Ander Lindegaard between the sticks. Once the football started, however, it was all drab and nothing of significance came about.

Just before half-time, however, former-United boy Wes Brown, of all people, scored an own goal which proved decisive in the end. Under pressure from Danny Welbeck, Brown was unfortunate as he nodded into his own goal.

The second half was a fairly better contest, with Sunderland keeper Keiren Westwood doing well to keep the Black Cats in the game. However, United held on for the win.
