KEY POINTS

  • Sergino Dest joined Barcelona in 2020
  • He previously played for Ajax
  • He contracted with Barca until 2025

Manchester United could reportedly sign FC Barcelona defender Sergino Dest during the 2022 summer window.

Dest is not a part of Barcelona boss Xavi Hernandez’s long-term plans at Camp Nou, and the club has informed Dest to look for a new club, 90Min reported. The American defender’s representatives have contacted Manchester United regarding a potential transfer. The Red Devils have been long-term admirers of the former Ajax defender.

Although signing a right-back is not a priority of Manchester United’s incoming manager Erik ten Hag, he does have an interest in a possible deal for Dest — a player who flourished under his charge at Ajax.

The right-back has played just 31 games for Barcelona this season, starting 23 of those. In 2022, the 21-year-old defender started only eight games for the Catalans. In addition, Barcelona signed veteran right-back Dani Alves in the middle of the season. The Brazilian defender is now set to sign a new deal that would keep him at Camp Nou beyond the 2022 summer.

Dest, who moved from Ajax to Barcelona in 2020, has a contract until 2025. He has a current market value of around $14 million, according to Transfermarkt, which is not a lot for a club like Manchester United.

Apart from Dest, Barcelona, who are set to rebuild their side ahead of the 2022-23 campaign, are ready to part ways with Frenkie de Jong and Marc-Andre ter Stegen to make room for new signings, as per Sports Mole.

While the Old Trafford side wants to secure de Jong, who is one of ten Hag’s top targets, the Dutchman wants to continue at Camp Nou, according to Spanish outlet Cadena Ser.

It was earlier reported that Barcelona were planning to include Dest in a cash-plus player deal to land Sevilla’s Jules Kounde. The Red-Whites are willing to accept Dest as they have been monitoring his situation at Barcelona for quite some time now.
