U.S. stocks closed higher on Thursday on a batch of strong earnings from various sector bellwethers, with financial and consumer stocks leading the way.

Based on the latest available data, the Dow Jones industrial average <.DJI> rose 131.95 points, or 1.33 percent, to end unofficially at 10,081.31. The Standard & Poor's 500 Index <.SPX> was up 11.51 points, or 1.06 percent, to finish unofficially at 1,092.91. The Nasdaq Composite Index <.IXIC> was up 14.56 points, or 0.68 percent, to close unofficially at 2,165.29.
