Actor Mel Gibson's criminal record was cleared on Tuesday when a judge granted his request to expunge a pair of drunken driving convictions stemming from his 2006 arrest in the California community of Malibu.

Gibson agreed to attend meetings for recovering alcoholics and do public service work as part of his 2006 conviction of driving under the influence. He fulfilled those obligations, leading to the judge clearing the charges from his record.

The Oscar-winning actor and director of Braveheart and The Passion of the Christ did not appear at Tuesday's brief court hearing.
