If you’re thinking of booking a last-minute vacation this Memorial Day weekend, you’re not alone; AAA expects 36.1 million people to travel this year. But even though the masses will be flying or driving to a myriad of destinations, you can still score a good deal.
According to the annual travel forecast, the 36.1 million people traveling will venture more than 50 miles away from home this year, with 88 percent of them driving to their destinations. Up 1.5 million from last year, the findings also mark the second-highest travel statistic since 2000, likely because of the long, harsh winter.
“The winter blues appear to have given Americans the travel bug and a case of cruise cabin fever as travel for the holiday is expected to hit a new post-recession high,” COO Marshall Doney said in a statement.
With the clock ticking toward the long weekend, prices for some last-minute getaways have skyrocketed.
